Afghanistan

Afghanistan

EMERGENCY has treated over 8 million patients in Afghanistan since 1999.

For over 40 years, Afghanistan has been devastated by instability and conflict that has killed over one million people, left hundreds of thousands wounded and disabled, and created over four million refugees. The legacy of previous wars continue to remain: anti-personnel mines and unexploded ordinance continue to wound children and adults, overwhelmingly civilians.

Today, Afghanistan is under an unprecedented economic crisis that is starving more than 14 million people. Nearly half of the country’s population live below the poverty line and access to care remains difficult, especially for those living in remote, rural areas.

Despite the challenges, our hospitals have never stopped being operational and continue to be a point of reference for the local population. We are offering free, high-quality care, as we have always done.

We began working in Eritrea in 2019.

In October 2019, we began supporting the clinics for cardiac treatment at the main public hospital in Eritrea, Orotta Medical Surgical National Referral Hospital in Asmara.

Iraq

In a country with one of the highest rates of unexploded ordnance in the world, millions of people are in need of medical assistance.

In 1998, we opened our Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Centre in Sulaymaniyah, a specialist facility for the provision of physiotherapy and the production of prostheses, orthoses, and other aids for disabled and amputee patients.

Italy

The fundamental right to health is protected in the Italian Constitution, yet many people living in Italy often have no access to care because they are not aware of their rights, face language barriers, or are unable to navigate a complex healthcare system.

We support vulnerable people and communities access healthcare, including migrants and other people who would often be excluded from the health system, through fixed and mobile outpatient clinics, information points, and Nobody Left Behind – a project to promote social inclusion and independence.

Healthcare, accessible by everyone, even in the country where EMERGENCY was founded.

Search and Rescue

The central Mediterranean Sea is one of the world’s deadliest migration routes.

We first began supporting search and rescue activities in the central Mediterranean in 2016, when we provided medical aid, cultural mediation and post-rescue assistance on board ships belonging to other NGOs.

In 2022, our own vessel, Life Support, joined the civil fleet of rescue ships and began conducting missions to save lives at sea.

Palestine

EMERGENCY has been in Gaza since August 2024, where more than two million people have been displaced by bombs and evacuation orders.

Our team continue to respond to the countless health needs of the population through our own Primary Healthcare Clinic, and by supporting a clinic run by the local, independent organisation, the Culture & Free Thought Association (CFTA).

Sierra Leone

EMERGENCY has been working in Sierra Leone since 2001. Originally opened as a trauma centre, our hospital in Goderich was the only to remain open during the 2014-2015 Ebola epidemic.

Today, the hospital serves as the referral point for traumatology for all of Sierra Leone, and runs the country’s only dedicated programme for the treatment of burns caused by the accidental ingestion of caustic soda—a common and dangerous phenomenon.

Sudan

Since conflict first broke out on 15 April 2023, Sudan faces one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. EMERGENCY immediately reshaped its activities in Sudan to continue guaranteeing adequate paediatric and cardiac care. We are the only international organisation that has always remained operational in Khartoum.

In Sudan, we provide paediatric care for children up to 14 years old and cardiac surgery, as well as pre- and post-operative cardiac care.

The Salam Centre is also the first ‘Centre of Excellence’ within the African Network of Medical Excellence (ANME), an initiative between EMERGENCY and several African countries to promote greater access to high-quality care across the continent. Thanks to its associated Regional Programme, the Salam Centre has operated on people from over 33 countries.

Uganda

EMERGENCY opened the Children’s Surgical Hospital in Entebbe to provide free paediatric surgical care in Uganda, one of the youngest countries in the world.

The second facility within the African Network of Medical Excellence (ANME), the hospital has treated children from several other countries through its Regional Programme for Paediatric Surgery.

ANME Programme

ANME promotes the construction of medical ‘Centres of Excellence’ across Africa.

The African Network of Medical Excellence (ANME) is an initiative between EMERGENCY and representatives and authorities from across Africa to affirm the right of every human being to access free, high-quality medical care. ANME aims to create medical Centres of Excellence that are capable of responding to health needs on a regional level. The network is currently comprised of two facilities, the Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery in Khartoum, Sudan, and the Children’s Surgical Hospital in Entebbe, Uganda.
